Passion of the Christ Ignites Christian backlash?
by Anonymous

August 17, 2004 -- The blockbuster hit of the summer "The Passion of the Christ" may have very well signaled a new direction in the spiritual conscience of a nation, but in the weeks and months since it's premiere, not everyone has revered it in the manner it's creator might have wished.

A new website that sells a variety of items emblazoned with the single word "Je$u$" makes it all to clear what it's designers think about the merchandising Mel Gibson has done with his film. The logo can be found on retro T-shirts, mugs, mouse pads, and even trucker hats...the haute couture for todays style conscious youth. Praising 80's style and music perhaps more than traditional Christian values, these items have been selling out in many of the locations where they are being offered, with some of the shirts being spotted on the backs of Hollywood's elite young celebrities.

The movie "Saved!" which counts former child star Macaulay Culkin among it's cast, may have only made $8.7 million at the box office, compared to Passion's $370 million to date, but it remains a high profile jab at the Hollywood Goliath.

In the world of America's teenagers, where the best way to be cool is to be different, this "Anti-Passion" trend seems to be growing more every day. It is little doubt that their appetite for playful and irreverent clothing and entertainment will only grow alongside the new upswell towards Christian values.
